Statue - dry lacquer - Bouddha - Burma - 19th century

Very beautiful and large statue of Buddha taking the earth as witness (Bhumisparsha Mudra) , Ava, XIXth century. The technique used is that of dry lacquer, or hollow lacquer called man-yun. The lacquer was placed on a clay sculpture, once the lacquer paste was perfectly dry, the clay figurine was removed by hollowing out. Then layers of lacquer are still applied as well as gold leaf. This technique was very widespread in Burma from the 18th century because it made it possible to easily transport these very light statues. This statue measures 79 cms in height. Note the very soft and very serene expression of the face. TRAVEL NOTEBOOK BY JEAN DUMOULIN The largest statue using this technique in Burma is a 6 meter high Buddha which can be carried by only a few men.
