Stefaan Vermuyten - Untitled

The painting of the 1990s was decidedly different from that of the 1980s. 'Irony, quotation and reference became the new parameters. Artists such as Mark Vanderleenen, Guy Van Bossche, and Bert De Beul gave this way of (painting) art form, but Luc Tuymans is undoubtedly, both nationally and internationally, the best known and most important advocate. With him, among others, Stefaan Vermuyten (Mechelen, 1959) made his first steps into the art world. In 1989 and 1990 they exhibited together in Cologne, Paris, and Antwerp (Gallery Zeno X) .

. But that similar thinking does not necessarily lead to equal themes or styles, which is proven by Vermuyten for the sake of completeness. 'The paintings by Vermuyten differentiate even more, since they also seem to be strongly intertwined with each other. Seem, because how diverse, extreme, and stylistically different these work on panel are, there is indeed a consequence in Vermuytens quasi abstract, tactile and searching brush strokes.
