Stefano Della Bella - Satiro e Satirello con capro

[ translate ]

\Artist: Stefano Della Bella
Technique: Etching\Signature: Plate signed
Original etching on copper matrix, in the third state out of four, imprinted on seventeenth-century paper. On the plate, above the lower marginal line, on the left the number 23 and the name of the author, in the center an indication of the privilege of the king of France, on the right the indication of the printer. The beautiful panel is the penultimate of a suite of etchings, in which the great Florentine engraver demonstrated his talent for genre scene with human and animal figures and for the description of costumes. The suite was built in the long period spent by S. della Bella in France; the tables were published in the second state, after the first state avantilettera, with the indication of the printer Franacois Langlois; after his death (which took place in 1647) the branches were reimpressed by the widow Langlois. The indication N. Langlois is instead typical of the third state. The image in question is the only one in the series with a mythological subject: a satyr, sitting under a tree holding a pan flute, observes a little satyr while playing with a goat. Specimen in good state of conservation, fresh, with thin margins beyond the imprint of the copper.
