Stephen Goddard, British b.1959- Nan Head, House Fire Lewisham, 2008; mixed media on board, 104x86.5cm(ARR) Provenance: Fine Art Society, London, where purchased by the present owner Exhibition: Fine Art Society, London, 2008 Note: The present piece illustrates Goddard’s highly original style, indisputably shaped by his background as a self-taught artist. Goddard employs a range of materials in the construction of his works, regularly using collage and mixed media, as in this piece. He also repeatedly returns to the imagery of the head of a lone figure against an undefined background, creating a feeling of enigmatic ambiguity which immediately engages the viewer. The influences on Goddard’s output are undeniably varying and diverse, but the present piece clearly owes a strong debt to 20th-century expressionism, imbued as it is with a strong sense of raw energy and emotion.
