Sterling Silver Basket and Whiting Hibiscus Bowl, 2 pcs

Two (2) pieces of sterling silver repousse hollowware. 1st item: Howard & Company, NY bread basket with pierced lobed sides in the Rococo style, center with 3-letter monogram, and c-scroll edges. Marked on underside of base "Howard & Company/New York/1892", underside of edge with maker's mark and "2931". 2nd item: Whiting Manufacturing Company NY oval bread bowl or tray with repousse hibiscus pattern lobed body, plain center, and c-scroll edges. Marked en verso with maker's mark and "Sterling/6508". Bread basket: 11 1/4" L x 2" H x 8 1/2" D. Bread bowl: 12 1/2" W x 2" H x 10" D. Combined weight: 26.4 troy ounces. Both late 19th to early 20th century. Provenance: The collection of Gary Glesser of Loudon, Tennessee, by descent from his grandparents, Captain Hoyt and Rachel Holton of Toledo, Ohio. Hoyt Holton became, at age 17, the youngest captain of a Great Lakes Freighter. In the 1960s, Captain Holton participated in a 26-day Admiral Byrd Society trip replicating the explorer's famous transpolar expedition, during which he met the Pope and Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev. Many items in the collection were brought back as souvenirs from that journey and other frequent voyages.
