Sterling Silver and Carved Smoky Quartz Ape Sculpture by Gianmaria Buccellati

An sculpture by Gianmaria Buccellati consisting of a realistically modeled carved smoky quartz hardstone in the form of an ape, in the manner of Faberge, sitting atop a tropical terrain cast in solid sterling silver with an all-over textured finish, foliage in the foreground and intertwined palm trees in the background, topped with gilt palm leaves. The sculpture mounted to a natural rock specimen. Gianmaria, whose animal form sculptures are routinely cast in silver, rarely surface in a carved hardstone. An exceptional piece of very fine craftsmanship. The underside with a hole revealing an etched signature to the silver: Gianmaria Buccellati, Italy 925. The silver with two indistinguishable hallmarks, likely an assay mark and Italian maker mark, i.e. MI 15.
