Steuben "Tyrian" Green and Gold Aurene Glass Vase

[ translate ]

DESCRIPTION: Tyrian vase with gold Aurene heart and trailed lead and vine decorations, iridized lead glass. Signed "Tyrian" along the underside.
Shape #2784

Reference:
Pictured at p. 98 of Objects of Desire, The Art of Frederick Carder by Alan Shovers

A relatively small number of Tyrian pieces were produced, all made about 1916. The name was suggested by its subtle overtones of purple which reminded Carder of the color of the imperial purple fabrics that were the fame of ancient Tyre. Tyrian is an opaque glass, which is exceptional for Steuben. Quality of shading from green to bluish purple was governed by the heat treatment at the fire. Gardner p. 67 See plate XII for a number of examples.

This Steuben variety is very apt to be confused, without recourse to the signature, as being a piece of Tiffany’s stone glass, or, laminated wares if you prefer. Shading from a delicate medium bluish-purple to a medium light green, it will have the lotus or ivy leaf and vine decor, as in the manner of the same decor in Aurene items. Each and every item was signed TYRIAN, with a number. Ericson p.90 vol I

Depth and quality of the coloration resulted from reheating, or “striking,” the partially formed object in an oxidizing atmosphere. The iridescence and sheen of Tyrian glass were achieved by spraying the glass with stannous chloride. The rarity of this glass today is undoubtedly due to the instability encountered in the production of glass. No two pieces of Tyrian are identical. Collector’s Choice Review #14.
