Rare early work on the Persian language, with translations of original papers and documents. No copies traced at auction. Charles Stewart (1764-1837) served in the Bengal Army of the East India Company from 1781-1808, rising to the rank of major, and was appointed assistant professor of Persian at Fort William College, Calcutta in 1800. After returning to England he became professor of oriental languages at the newly opened East India College at Hailey in Hertfordshire from 1807-1827. The purpose of the College was to train 'writers', i.e. administrators, for the Honourable East India Company.
