[ translate ]

Sold by the Art Institute of Chicago, Sold Without Reserve
Manner of Jan van Huysum
Still lifes of flowers in glass vases

a pair, both oil on panel
each panel: 23 ½ by 18 ½ in.; 59.7 by 47 cm.
each framed: 27 by 21¾ in.; 68.6 by 55.2 cm.

(2)

Condition Report:
The panels each consist of a single plank supported on the reverse with a vertical batten; they are flat, stable, and beveled on the right and left edges of the reverse of each panel. The images read very well beneath clear varnish. The repaired vertical cracks that are supported by the battens are slightly visible to the naked eye, each in the right half of the painting. Additional discolored vertical repairs to address prior cracks are visible on each panel; the second panel also has a discolored repair of uneven texture at the top right corner. Under UV inspection, retouching is visible along the vertical cracks in each panel about 6 inches from the right edge. The first panel also shows retouching at the top left edge and the top right corner, and the second panel shows retouching at the top right above the central flower and in the top right corner. Overall the retouching is not distracting and the paintings can hang in their present state. Offered in matching simply carved ebonized wood frames with gilt inner liners.
