These are articulated storyteller puppets used in Santal festival & wedding celebrations. The Santal people are an ethnographic group in Bihar & Northern India. These storyteller puppets used to be displayed on a diorama used in performance by itinerant storytellers to illustrate folk tales. Many of these were distributed by traders in Kathmandu along with other Santhal material culture such as dodro banam (bowed musical instruments) , flutes, palkee panels (marital litter) during the mid and late 20th century.
