Striking Luristan Bronze Cylinder / Mace Head

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A striking cast bronze cylinder, made to be part of a mace - probably placed around a wooden or less decorated metal staff into the socket beneath the mace head. The body has repeated high relief bulges around one end and incised triangular motifs at its center. Each end flares out slightly. Bronze Age Luristan art was the work of nomadic herdsmen and horsemen who crafted small, portable objects, including daggers, swords, and other weapons. Weapons and related bronze objects like these would have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried. Size: 1.5" W x 6.35" H (3.8 cm x 16.1 cm)

Provenance: private Tennessee, USA collection, purchased from Timeline Auctions, London, UK; property of an American collector; previously from an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
