Strongbox - Iron (cast/wrought)

[ translate ]

Iron chest provided with a lid, walls reinforced with bands of checkerboard plates, chamfered nails and two pins on the front face, which fixes a solid iron bar to its corresponding rings. Front lock in the shape of a rosette, attached to the face.
\r
The complicated system of springs, straps and leaf springs is activated by turning a single key through a complicated set of sliders and rockers with recovery springs, all related to each other in a labyrinthine and successive manner, the lock is hidden in the upper part and not in the false front lock.
\r
The piece corresponds to a well-known typology of cash chest originating in southern Germany - with the cities of Nuremberg and Augsburg as the main production centers - from where it was exported throughout Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. This model triumphed during the second half of the 15th century using iron as the main material, replacing wood. The incorporation of the multiple-pin lock was what definitively consolidated the security of these chests. The system was similar to that of modern security doors and had been invented by a locksmith from Nuremberg, the European city that set the guidelines to follow in the construction of this type of works.
\r
These Nuremberg chests called "soldier chests" were used from the beginning to transport the soldiers of mercenary armies, but they also served corporations and individuals who wanted to protect their most beloved treasures. They were highly valued pieces throughout Europe, which had their moment of splendor in the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, although they continued to be manufactured until the middle of the next century.
\r
This is an extraordinary piece of enormous size.
