Stuart Cumberland, British b.1970- Girls, 2006; acrylic and collage on linen, signed and dated 2006 on the reverse, 195x160cm (unframed)(ARR) Provenance: Kate MacGarry, London, where purchased by the present owner. Exhibition: Kate MacGarry, London 3rd March to 8th April 2006. Note: Stuart Cumberland is a contemporary British painter. Cumberland’s work demonstrates his interest in exploring the role and significance of painting, which is now often seen as a more traditional medium in an artistic landscape which has shifted drastically with the growth of conceptual art in the past few decades. Cumberland’s emphasis on the act of painting itself as a central feature of the artwork is expressed by his liberal and loose application of pigment to the canvas, with his tendency to leave parts of the support visible lending a sketchiness to his works which again draws the viewer’s attention to the artist’s hand in the production of the image. Cumberland’s work has been exhibited at galleries across Europe, including at Sprüth Magers Lee, Munich, The Approach Gallery, and the Kate MacGarry Gallery in London.
