Stuart, George Washington, Engraved Illman 1870s

[ translate ]

Portrait of President George Washington, with his signature, steel engraving by Illman Brother, 1870s, after the painting by Gilbert Stuart, signed in plate "Painted by Stuart" and "Engraved by Illman Bro's.". The glass frame is a late 20th century reproduction of an antique frame.

Gilbert Charles Stuart (1755-1828) was an American painter from Rhode Island Colony who is widely considered one of America's foremost portraitists. His best known work is the unfinished portrait of George Washington, begun in 1796, that is sometimes referred to as the Athenaeum Portrait. Stuart retained the portrait and used it to paint scores of copies that were commissioned by patrons in America and abroad.

The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for more than a century and on various postage stamps of the 19th century and early 20th century.

Illman Brothers was an engraving and printing company located in Philadelphia, active from 1860 through the 1900s. The firm included Edward, George, Henry, and William Illman, and was still in existence in 1907. Charles T. Illman, born about 1842, joined his brothers in the firm after 1860.
