Studio Pottery Sgraffito Stoneware Vase

9 x 4 inches. A hand-thrown studio pottery stoneware vase featuring a tapered ovoid body rising to a short, slightly flaring collar rim. The vessel is constructed from a reddish-brown clay body, which is visible at the interior and the unglazed foot. The exterior is finished in a light gray, speckled glaze with visible horizontal throwing rings. The central portion of the body is decorated with an incised sgraffito motif consisting of overlapping gestural lines inlaid with a dark oxide. The abstract design portrays stylized human figures, including one toward the upper right with a circular head and simplified facial features. The underside of the base features an incised mark consisting of a large character resembling an M or a conjoined AP above several illegible numerical digits; the mark is partially obscured by the texture of the clay and surface wear.
