Studio Wieki Somers - Thomas Eyck - Vase - Deep Water, number 16/99

Deepwater is a narrow, rectangular vase that makes the impression of being filled with water and oil. Human activity disturbs the natural balance between oil and water, sometimes resulting in an environmental disaster such as the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Oil floats on water so the vase is divided in two: one half of crystal clear water and one half with nature distorted by humankind, the oil, above that. There is a water reservoir that runs down the centre of the vase, in which the flower can be set. 'The flower - or more precisely, nature - seeks its way through the oil towards the clean water', in Somers' words. Numbered and signed edition of 99 pieces.
