Studio of Miguel Canals,
Spanish 1925-1995-

Still life with flowers, fruit, and vessels in a sumptuous interior;

oil on canvas, with the artist’s studio stamp ‘STUDIO M. CANALS’ (on the stretcher), 80 x 100.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
By descent.

Note:
The present work depicts the riches of a wealthy household, exhibited by the embroidered tapestry, silverware, jewellery box and the abundant bouquet. The display is rendered in a theatrical fashion by the thick curtain unveiling the subjects, and by the foreshortened series of colonnades which is reminiscent of a theatre’s stage. The composition apparently derives from the visual heritage of Roman 17th-century still-life painters and their Lombardian 18th-century followers. Similarities, for example, are traceable in the works of the Rome-based painters Francesco Noletti (1611-1654) and Carlo Manieri (1662-1700) and the paintings of the Lombardian Giacomo Desti (1751-1779) and Francesco Gianlisi (1650-1720).
