The present work is based on a composition by Jan Wellens de Cock, formerly in the Abbé de Lecluse Collection, Berchem. Another variant of the composition, attributed to a member of the artist's workshop, was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 25 June 2021, lot 77.
Several elements of the composition may also be compared with the artist's engraving of the same subject (Hollstein, vol. IV, p. 192, no. 1), which demonstrates the dissemination of the design through both painted and printed versions.
