Sumerian Pottery Plaque - Warrior w/ Shield & Club

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A mold-formed pottery plaque depicting a striding, right-facing warrior in relief. The warrior presents wearing a knee-length kilt while his massive beard shrouds most of his upper chest, and a cap with a thick brim surrounds his brow and the top of his coiffure. Held in his right hand is a slender, ovoid shield with forked a top and bottom, perhaps made of hide, and a formidable club is brandished in his left hand. Size: 2.18" W x 3.64" H (5.5 cm x 9.2 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
