Superb Roman Lead-Glazed Pottery Skyphos
Roman, Republican to early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century BCE to early 1st century CE. A gorgeous lead-glazed pottery skyphos, the glaze fired to a mottled deep and pale blue-green, with age giving it an incredible pearlescence. The glaze coats the sides and handles and is pooled in the lower interior, forming a rich, colorful coating that sparkles in the light. The skyphos form - a deep body with ring handles, used for drinking - was popular from the later Hellenistic to early Roman periods, made in glass, ceramic, and metal. The mold-made body is decorated with a pine-cone or petal-like motif, with smooth foot, rim, and handles. Most known lead-glazed vessels from the Roman era are a darker green, making this a rare example. Size: 4.95" W x 2.75" H (12.6 cm x 7 cm)
