Superb Viking Silver & Rock Crystal Necklace, 214.3 g
Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, early Christian period, ca. 9th to 10th century CE. A magnificent necklace of a lengthy form comprised of a meticulously braided silver chain (93%) that terminates with a pair of sheet-silver caps on either end. Each geometrically-adorned cap has a thin loop protruding from the lower ringlet that is threaded through the top lobes of a three-lobed ornament. Hanging from the ends are a pair of stunning, hand-carved rock crystal brooches that are surrounded by stippled silver wraps and have nearly-pure silver (99%) cross pendants secured via slender pins through the stone. Early Christianity was a prominent influence on Viking culture and art, and this necklace is an exemplary illustration of the culmination of both preeminent artistic styles!
