Superb and antique Russian Icon of Our Lady of Kazan - Wood

Antique Russian Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. Double kovcheg (the kovcheg or ark — a recess in the surface. Almost all ancient icons have a kovcheg.) 19th century. Made in the North of Russia. Despite the losses at the bottom (see photo) the Board is strong and does not crumble. The icon was cleaned and restored (see the photo 2) . Almost all Russian non-Museum icons were updated and restored once every 50-70 years or so. Dimensions: 31,5 x 28 x 2,5 cm Our Lady of Kazan, also called Mother-of-God of Kazan was a holy icon of the highest stature within the Russian Orthodox Church, known as the Holy Protectress of Russia.
