Supreme Court Archive of Signed Materials (15): O'Connor, Warren, Stone, etc.

A group of fifteen signed letters, photographs, and other documents relating to Supreme Court Justices and other legal figures. The majority are typed letters signed, with an additional few autograph letters signed, signed first day covers, and a signed check. Below is described what is included in the group:

1. William Rehnquist (1924-2005) Signed First Day Cover. Washington, D.C., dated February 2, 1990. Signed "William H Rehnquist". The cover is mounted and matted with a black and white photograph of Rehnquist to the overall size of 11" x 16.5".

2. Sandra Day O'Connor (1930- ) Autograph Note Signed. Washington, D.C., undated. Signed "Sandra O'Connor". A thank you note written on Supreme Court of the United States letterhead and addressed to Representative Bateman. Matted and framed with a photograph of O'Connor to the overall size of 13.5" x 17.5".

3. Harlan Stone (1872-1946) Typed Letter Signed. Washington, D.C., dated December 7, 1933. Signed "Harlan F Stone" and addressed to Hon. Hamilton Fish. Stone sends his regrets that he will be unable to attend an event at the Touchdown Club. Matted with a black and white photograph and information plaque of Stone to the overall size of 20" x 16".

4. Billings Learned Hand (1872-1961) Typed Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 5.75" x 6.75", New York, dated April 14, 1954. Signed "Learned Hand" and addressed to Dr. Edward G. Olsen. Hand returns a card enclosed by Olsen and provides his consent for its use for any purpose. Accompanied by a black informational plaque.

5. Charles Hughes (1862-1948) Typed Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 10.5", New York, dated May 16, 1927. Signed "Charles E Hughes" and addressed to Hon. Ewing Cockrell. A thank you letter for sending a group of materials.

6. Charles Hughes (1862-1948) Typed Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 7" x 9.75", Albany, dated August 17, 1908. Signed "Charles E Hughes" and addressed to James G. Graham. A thank you letter for sending friendly sentiments.

7. Earl Warren (1891-1974) Typed Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", Washington, D.C., dated April 29, 1964. Signed "Earl Warren" and addressed to Robert J. Stein Jr. Warren writes that he is unable to accept a dinner invitation because "my duties in connection with the President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy keeps me busy all day and far into the night…"

8. Stanley Reed (1884-1980) Autograph Note Signed on a TLS. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 11", Washington, D.C., dated Ca. December 6, 1973. A reply written at the lower margin of a typed letter, signed "Stanley Reed". Justice Reed writes to clarify that there is no known familial connection between himself and Senator Thomas B. Reed of Mississippi.

9. Harlan Stone (1872-1946) Typed Letter Signed. Washington, D.C., dated May 14, 1924. Signed "Harlan F. Stone" and addressed to D.J. Reed. Stone writes that he regrets having to terminate the "Dollar a Year Men" program for Special Agents of the Bureau of Investigations.

10. Morrison R, Waite (1816-1888) Autograph Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 4.5" x 7", No place, dated February 23, [no year]. Signed "M.R. Waite" and addressed to Walter. Waite invites his friend to lunch and a matinee showing of "Mrs. Potter's Russian Honeymoon". Accompanied by a lithograph of Waite with a facsimile signature.

11. John Paul Stevens (1920-2019) Signed First Day Cover. Washington, D.C., dated December 17, 1981. A U.S. Supreme Court first day cover signed "John Paul Stevens".

12. Fred Vinson (1890-1953) Signed Check. Measuring 8.25" x 3", Ashland, KY, dated September 28, 1949. Signed "Fred M. Vinson", paying $12.00 to Washington and Lee University for the Student Accident Medical Reimbursement Plan. With cancel punches.

13. Edward D. White (1845-1921) Typed Letter Signed. 2pp, measuring 5.25" x 6.75", Washington, D.C., dated February 7, 1911. Signed "E.D. White" and addressed to Charles Strauss Esq. White states that he is unable to attend the New York County Lawyers Association Dinner. With a handwritten note by the recipient on the front page reading "Judge Parker, Perhaps this should be read & commended on. Strauss."

14. Samuel Lee (1767-1839) Autograph Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 8" x 12.25", Barre, Massachusetts, dated December 19, 1826. Signed "Saml. Lee" and addressed to Hon. John Locke. Lee inquires about payment due him for his military service. Reading in part: "…Having had frequent opportunities to confer with Mr. Davis at Worchester, respecting my claims upon the Gen. Government for services in the revolutionary war, upon which I wrote you in the former Session of the Congress - have now transmitted papers relative to the same to him…[I] wish for your further cooperation in throwing what light you have upon that Case…"

15. William M. Evarts (1818-1901) Autograph Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 4" x 6.25", Windsor, Vermont, dated July 30, 1884. Signed "Wm M Evarts" and addressed to a Mrs. Fish. Evarts responds to an inquiry about sitting for a portrait, stating that he is already has one commissioned.

The group is in very good condition, with expected light toning, soiling, and foxing in places. Most have flattened mail folds. There is a small amount of chipping and paper loss to the Samuel Lee letter, partly due to the seal being broken open. Silvering to the photograph of Sandra Day O'Connor. All with bold signatures.
