Suriname, Suriname; J.H. de Bussy, Amsterdam - Kaart van Suriname naar de opmetingen van J.F.A. Cateau van Rosevelt en J.F.A.E. van Lansberge, 1898 - 1881-1900

Coloured lithographic map of Suriname (and the West Indian Islands) drawn by J. Wackie and printed in 1899 with the Bussy in Amsterdam. Condition is good. Scale 1: 500,000 Map is particularly interesting because of the many processed and (un) resolved border problems with neighbouring countries (France, England and Brazil) . The first 'modern' map of Suriname. However, accuracy is still not greater than that of its predecessors. Due to the ‘overland tracés’ of surveyor Loth, it was possible to capture the interconnection between the most famous rivers. These tracés were motivated by the search for gold. The southeastern half of Suriname is well represented on the map. The reason are the indicated concessions for gold and balata. Most of the map’s image covers an almost unknown wilderness. Page with the northern part of Suriname with insert: Nederlandsch Westindische Koloniën. Makers: Surveyor Johan François Adriaan Cateau van Rosevelt Surveyor L. C. van Lansberge Surveyor W. L. Loth Lithograph J. Wackie Literature: F. C. Bubberman . . . [et al.] , Links with the past : the history of cartography of 1500-1971. Amsterdam : Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1973. xii, 179 p.
