Swinburne, The Tale Of Balen, 1st Edition 1896
"The Tale Of Balen", by Algernon Charles Swinburne, published by Chatto & Windus, London, 1896. First edition, later printing with 32 pages publisher's catalog for September 1896 [1st printing's catalog is dated March 1896].
In "The Tale of Balen", Swinburne confronts and overturns the typically Victorian idealization of medieval times, particularly the "Golden Age" of Arthur. In his conception of history as essentially cyclical, this age, like any other, is characterized by the agonies of disappointed love, by travail and Empedoclean strife, by the futile battle against evil, by dissimulation of all kinds and, perhaps most significantly, by a hopeless tangle of moral uncertainties and ambiguities that always frustrate and eventually destroy the stalwart and ingenuous heart.
US: Priority (c.2-4 days) --------- $12.50
Canada: Priority (c.2-6 weeks) ---- $27.50
World: Priority (c.2-8 weeks) ----- $37.50
