Swiss 17.6mm Model 1817/42 Artillery model percussion musket, 33.5inch sighted Spanish form barrel stamped with the number 2078 and Cantonal marks to the breech, birch schutzen style stock with horn forend cap, fitted the steel furniture, This musket was converted from flintlock during the 1840’s conversion programme; probably Cantonally, since it has a flat hammer. Cantons had considerable leeway early in the century, with many privately made arms being carried, but conforming to Cantonal calibre. Carried by troops of the Cantonal Artillery Park – possibly Bern or Bernese Oberland Artillery park. Section 58 (2) Antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18. Dimensions: 122cm longCondition Report The musket is in bright cleaned-up condition. The bore is dark and looks to have a fair amount of surface corrosion, it does not appear to have been cleaned up with the outside of the gun and would probably improve significantly with careful attention. There are patches of pitting especially around the lock and breech area. The lock functions correctly with a strong spring, the nipple is missing from the barrel. The stock has several repairs including being cracked around the action/ barrel join, a crack to the wood around the first ramrod pipe and a crack emanating from the lock area running towards the butt. There are two patches of filling to the stock, one part which has chipped away. The repairs appear to be stable. Please register to request a condition report
