Swiss Cylinder Music Box-Sublime Harmonie

[ translate ]

Fine 19th-century Swiss cylinder music box housed in a heavily inlaid rosewood and burl walnut case with ebonized molding and brass bail handles. The lid features an inlaid marquetry medallion depicting musical instruments and floral sprays framed by double-line stringing. Opening the lid reveals the original hand-colored lithographed tune card mounted under glass, listing 10 airs in "Sublime Harmonie" style, including overtures and polkas. The internal brass movement features a brass cylinder and comb under a secondary inner glass lid, flanked by a tune selector indicator wheel stamped "CHANGE / REPEAT / TUNE" on the left. The movement is equipped with Jacot’s Patented Safety Check mechanism (patented Sept. 22, 1886) mounted to the governor/spring arbor, designed to prevent runaways and tooth damage in the event of a spring failure. Accompanied by its original winding crank. Cylinder Length: Approx. 13½ in. (per tune sheet). Tune Count: 10 Airs. Features: Jacot's Safety Check (1886), Sublime Harmonie comb, Change/Repeat selector, exterior crank-wind mechanism. Case is in good antique condition overall; light surface wear, minor scuffs, and age-appropriate hairline crazing to finish. Inlay and stringing remain intact. Handles and brass fittings retain an attractive, original patina. Tune sheet is complete with expected age toning and light edge wear. Mechanically it cranks smooth and holds tension properly. Comb is clean and intact with all teeth present. The speed governor/flywheel rotates, but the stop arm linkage requires minor adjustment/tuning as it currently engages the governor prematurely. Case Dimensions: 29 in. L x 12 in. W x 9 in. H. Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available Post-Auction.
