This plaster maquette was given by Szukalski to psychedelic poster artist Rick Griffin and predates the establishment of Archives Szukalski and their late 1980's/early 1990's issue of Szukalski's bronzes. According to Glenn Bray of the Szukalski Archive, there were approximately six or so plasters fabricated of the head. The design was originally a part of a larger sculpture that burned in a fire after Szukalski had sent it to a gallery show in New York. The Archives Szukalski bronze was issued in an edition of 35 that sold for $3,500 each. "A Prime example of Szukalski's artistic stylization, this head commemorates the for Poland disastrous Yalta Conference of 1945" - Bronzes of Szukalski, p. 10. Richard Alden "Rick" Griffin (1944-1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. As a contributor to the underground comix movement, his work appeared regularly in Zap Comix. Provenance: from the collection of Griffin's friend, artist Jacaeber Kastor.
Condition Report: A few scuffs and flakes to patina; about near fine.
