TABLE RUNNER FROM WILDENSTEIN CASTLE NEAR BUBENDORF Important Upper-Rhine wool-work from the Early Baroque, probably Basel, ca. 1650-80.

Wool and silk embroidered on a canvas ground. Rectangular table runner with circumferential green and gold fringe. Central field decorated with stylized blossoms. Each blossom has a different color intensity in shades of green-blue, beige and reddish-brown. The central field determined the size of the table surface to be covered, and is surrounded by an exquisite border. Outer fields decorated with roses and vines. The main border is enclosed by a wavy border with stylized plants and with outer fringes. Minor repairs of the time.
200 × 150 cm (without fringes).

Table runner with beautiful intense colors, the rear is entirely preserved. Minor repairs.

Provenance:
- Probably Meinrad von Planta von Wildenberg, from 1684 onwards.
- Peter Werthemann-De Bary, from 1710 onwards.
- Johann Werthemann, from 1747 onwards.
- By inheritance to his brother Peter Werthemann-Burckhardt, 1769.
- By inheritance to his widow, 1792.
- Peter Vischer-Sarasin (Blue House line).
- Owned by his direct descendants, until Auction Sotheby's Zurich, 1988.
- Zurich private property, acquired at the above auction.

The wool-work on offer, dating from ca. 1650-80, together with the wool-work of the notable families Stockar and Tschachtlan, dated 1653 and dated 1533 (LM-6097. 1-2), in the Swiss National Museum (LM227818), as well as a wool-work (SH-99.7), which is also in the Swiss National Museum, with the coats of arms of Sonnenberg and von Hallwyl and dated 1543, are certainly among the most important early ornamental carpets on the territory of the Old Swiss Confederation.
