THE MEDAL GROUPING OF MAJOR GENERAL CALEB VANCE HAYNES

CALEB VANCE HAYNES (1895-1966) was a U.S. Air Force major general and one of the most important and talented military aviators and commanders of World War II. Haynes organized the Assam-Burma-China Ferry Command and evacuated Burma with the Chinese and RAF. He then went to China to organize and command the Bomber Command of the China Air Task Force under Gen. Claire Chennault. He later returned to India to organize the India Air Task Force of the 10th Air Force. Important group of twelve medals awarded to Haynes during his distinguished military career. Includes: Distinguished Service Medal, named and cased with lapel pin; Legion of Merit, Legionnaire, named and cased with lapel pin; Silver Star with Silver Oak Leaf device, named, cased with three lapel pins; Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf devices, named and further engraved: "186 AUG. C. FRANK", cased with lapel pin; Air Medal with two Oak Leaf devices , named with "Brigadier General", cased with chest ribbon and lapel pin; Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf device, named, World War I Victory Medal, cased; Chilean Commander Grade of the National Order of Merit, with original blue ribbon, cased; World War II Victory Medal, cased, with ribbon; Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf device and lapel pin; American Defense Medal, cased, with ribbon and lapel pin; and the Portuguese Navy Medal for Bravery, 1st Class, for Haynes' rescue of the crew of a Portuguese ship from Newfoundland Base Command. Many of the medals also include one of Haynes' calling cards as major general. WITH: four brigadier general's silver uniform stars (two not matching), and three major general's lapel insignia, also from Haynes. WITH: ten uniform ribbon bars showing Haynes' many awards. 29 pieces in all, overall fine condition. Consigned directly by a linear descendant, with our letter of provenance.
