THE SKETCHBOOKS OF MARY ANNE NORTHERN 1827-1834; two sketchbooks, the smaller of which may have been
a 'working book' which includes notes on the views while the larger book may have been a 'best book' with more finished drawings. The smaller book has a note in the front 'Sixty sketches from nature taken by Mary Anne Northern of scenes in Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire during a stay of more than six weeks with her mother and sister Fanny, 1834'. At the back of this book there are further sketches taken on an earlier visit of 1827 to North Wales, Shropshire, etc; all sketches are in pencil. This is a fascinating record of the Lake District at the beginning of the 19th century, the larger book 19.5 x 24.9cm (2).
