Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has been restored and could be hung in its current condition. However, the varnish is quite glossy. Although it illuminates the darker colors, it could be softened slightly. Close examination with the naked eye reveals a very healthy paint layer. The lively applications of crimson glazes throughout the dress of the mother are in beautiful condition. There is no damage to this area. Some of Gainsborough's drawing lines are clearly visible in the dress, but this is all original. Some cracking and slight thinness in the left side of the mother's face have been well retouched. The child is in similarly good condition, showing no retouches in her dress, and only a spot or two in her right hand and a few isolated dots in the lower part of her face. In the father, there are only small spots of retouching in his forehead and mouth, and a couple of restorations in his chin. There is a 2 by 1 inch restoration in the left cuff of his coat. There is a restoration above his head, and another group in the curtains in the upper left. The rug on which they are standing is in beautiful condition. The original varnish is quite milky under ultraviolet light, and there may be restorations in the background and darker colors of coat and trousers of the father that cannot be identified under ultraviolet light.

"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
