THREE CUERDA-SECA POTTERY TILES WITH CALLIGRAPHIC DECORATION
Safavid Iran or Mughal India, 17th-early 18th century
Earthenware, each of square form, the front decorated with white calligraphy outlined in the cuerda seca technique against a cobalt-blue ground, the inscription too fragmented to be legible.
Approximately 9cm square each (3)
For similar examples:
usually attributed to Safavid Iran (ex. Christie’s South Kensington, Arts & Textiles of the Islamic & Indian Worlds, 28 April 2017, London, lot 12) but Bonhams has recently attributed a similar tile to Mughal India (London, 21 May 2026, lot 219) which shares with ours the same body material, technique and colors, although the calligraphy is too fragmented to compare its features.
