THREE WOOD NETSUKE OF MYTHICAL BEINGS
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
The first carved as a kappa with a tortoise carapace and long, neatly incised hair, pulling back a large lotus leaf, revealing a small frog, all on an oval base, with a single himotoshi through the base. The second depicting a shishi standing on its hind legs with the front legs placed on a brocade ball containing a loose ball inside, the details neatly executed, natural himotoshi and signed within a rectangular reserve to the underside. The third a further netsuke of a shishi on a rectangular base, with the front legs placed on a bell, single himotoshi through the base.
HEIGHT 2.5 – 3.7 cm
Condition: The first and third with a minor chip, otherwise good condition with some wear.
