8:o. With 10 partly folding plates engraved by Johan Niclas Ahl (complete, 1 plate with slight tear in vol. 2, some browning to 4 plates), 1 folding engraved vignette at the end of part 1.
Brown half calf, gilt spines in five compartments, speckled edges, 3 contemporary, partly worn, vol. 1 in modern half calf, slightly different. Some spotting and foxing in volumes 2-3, vol. 4 with some steam staining in the beginning. Signature dated Uppsala 1807. Signature on the title and inside of the cover in vol. 2-4.

Pritzel 9259. First edition of this important scientific voyage and a detailed account of Japan. Thunberg (1743-1828) travelled to Japan, Ceylon and South Africa and was called the “Japanese Linnaeus” as well as “the father of Cape Botany”. The work was also published in German, English and French.
