* TILLY ARMSTRONG RESTING
oil on canvas, signed unframed overall size 92cm x 120cm Note: My work is autobiographical and focuses on my own irrational fear of being abandoned and alone. Painting comes more naturally to me than other mediums, and allows me a more profound and complete means of communication. There has been a tradition of loneliness, anxiety and violence in painting and I have been particularly inspired by the work of artists such as Cecily Brown because of her use of erotic content, e.g. Sweetie, and also Frida Khalo and Chris Ofili who both deal with raw expression, colour and pattern in their paintings. I am interested in presenting psychological dramas and representing times when loneliness is intensified. The figures are often lying in very bare and desolate spaces, this is to reflect the mental space of the female figure. Interior spaces and landscapes have also allowed me to explore these themes as I use colour, satire and the grotesque to create unsettling and sinister worlds. Opening my subject out of the bedroom and into the streets and spaces I live in has allowed me to broaden the subject matter further and discuss wider themes of loneliness and violence.
