Te Utrecht, Bij G. van den Brink, Jansz. [..], 1779, LXII,457,[1] pp. With 7 fold. engraved maps/ plans by O. Lindeman after i.a. Th. Kitchin. Large 8vo (ca. 22 x 13,5 cm.), late 18th-cent. half-calf, gilt ribbed spine with mor. letterpiece, uncut.

Very rare first edition (printed in Utrecht “Ter Boekdrukkerije van G. van der Veer en Zoon”) of a Dutch translation by the Dutch school-teacher O.R.F.W. Winckelman with a preface by the Dutch lawyer & historian Meinard Tydeman (1741-1825) of a late 18th-cent. travel report by the English classical scholar Richard Chandler (1738-1810) of which the first English edition, titled “Travels in Greece [..]” was published in Oxford in 1776. “Chandler, who was a good Greek archaeologist, was sent to Greece in 1764 by the Society of Dilettanti to copy inscriptions [..]” (cited from Cox). Ex bibliotheca Anselm van den Bogaerde (1776-1866, Belgian bibliophile) with his letterpress book-plate mounted on upper paste-down. Ex bibliotheca Dr. Maria Frederika Jongkees-Vos (1933-2018, Dutch archaeologist). – Binding sl. rubbed/ worn along extremities, occ. sl. foxed/ browned, but nevertheless in good condition.
