TROMPE-L’ŒIL GRAPE TUREEN
Rheinsberg, circa 1770–78, attributed to.
A bunch densely applied with blue grapes, washed in pale blue at the base, the cover applied with a branch bearing turquoise-blue leaves. Both interior surfaces marked in manganese with a double-arrow mark and "+++"; the underside of the tureen base with "1" in blue.
L 16 cm, H 11 cm, W 9.5 cm.
Restorations.
Provenance:
Peter Ducret Collection, Kilchberg; acquired at the Grosvenor Antiques Fair in London, ca. 1986.
Contrary to the attribution to Schrezheim in the printed catalogue, P. Ducret proposed an attribution to the Rheinsberg faience manufactory.
In 1770, Carl Friedrich Lüdicke purchased the factory at Rheinsberg, which had been founded in 1762. It was not until 1778 that he was required to mark the faience with the ligated initials "L" (Lüdicke) and "R" (Rheinsberg). For comparison, Ducret referred to a grape tureen marked "R." in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin (exh. cat. 1976, "Fayencen", p. 67, no. 65). Riesebieter (1920) illustrates a similar model from Frankfurt an der Oder (fig. 351).
