TRUMAN CAPOTE'S GROUP OF THREE PETITE OWLS
Three small owls, two ceramic and one cloisonné. The largest is modeled crouching with the tail extended, painted in the Turkish manner with red tulips and green leaves on white and inscribed HAND MADE to the underside; the second stands upright in cloisonné, densely worked with polychrome flowers and a rosette to the breast in enamel within gilt wires; the smallest is blue and white porcelain with a close scale pattern and blue eyes.
Capote kept owls about him indoors and out. Of the sanctuary beyond his Sagaponack window he wrote: "A friendly community of pheasants and rabbits, wild geese and owls, all live there. Frequently I gaze out to find a fox staring me in the eye." —Truman Capote, "At the Sea and in the City," House Beautiful, April 1969.
