TRUMAN CAPOTE'S HANDMADE ACRYLIC LILY PAPERWEIGHT, AS SEEN IN ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST 1976
A domed acrylic paperweight, circular, with a flat base, a lily and its leaves set whole within the resin. Both the flower and the resin have gone amber with age, the petals now the color of dark honey and the leaf veining still legible through the body. Capote began collecting paperweights in 1948, when Colette gave him one in Paris — that weight is also in this sale — and in time he began making his own.
Condition: the acrylic is yellowed throughout, as cast acrylic of this age is, with light surface scratching to the dome and the base.
Approx. Dimensions: 3.5 " Dia x 1.5 " H
Artist or Maker: Truman Capote
Provenance: Truman Capote; Gerald Clarke, his biographer
This lot is part of The Magpie and the Swans: The Possessions of Truman Capote, collected over a lifetime between New York and Sagaponack, and preserved since 1984 by his biographer, Gerald Clarke.
Literature: Architectural Digest, January/February 1976, text by Rosemary Kent, photography by Richard Champion.
