TUDOR. Men’s Oyster Prince Submariner wristwatch, 200 m. Ref. 7924, circa 1960. Automatic movement, displays hours, minutes, and seconds. Black dial, gold hands. Stainless steel case. The back of the steel case is engraved with “Original Oyster case by Rolex Geneva.” Case diameter: 37 mm; height: 15 mm. Scratched bezel, signs of wear. Movement needs servicing. Attached diving-style fabric strap. Renamed “Big Crown” by collectors in reference to its 8-mm winding crown, the 7924 model was introduced in 1958. At first glance similar to its predecessors, it features a fundamental innovation in that its water resistance has now been doubled, with a maximum diving depth set at 200 meters. To achieve this new threshold, the 37-mm-diameter Submariner case was made thicker and fitted with a larger screw-down crown. A new, thicker, domed Tropic-style Plexiglas crystal was installed to better withstand high pressures. Powered by the same automatic Caliber 390 as the 7922 model, this new Submariner features the inscription “200 m = 660 ft” at the 6 o’clock position on its black lacquered dial. Its hands feature the characteristic Submariner design. Bibliographic reference: www.tudorwatch.com/fr/inside-tudor/history/tudor-history-submariners-1954-to-1968.
