TUREI EVEN – RABBI ARYEH LEIB OF METZ – FIRST EDITION – IMPORTANT OWNERSHIP INSCRIPTION .

Turei Even, rabbinic novella on Rosh Hashana, Chagiga and Meggilah by Rabbi Aryeh Leib of Metz, famous rabbi and author of Shaagas Aryeh. Metz 5541 (1781) – First Edition.

This copy belonged to the famous Rabbi Shaul Amsterdam (1717-1790) – Rabbi of Amsterdam and author of Binyan Ariel.

Inscription on fly-leaf reads: ‘Belongs to the great and famous gaon, my friend and mechutan Rabbi Shaul Av Beth Din of Amsterdam’.

Rabbi Shaul was a son of Rabbi Aryeh Loeb of Amsterdam and his mother was a daughter of the famous Chacham Tzvi. Succeeded his father-in-law Rabbi Avraham Cahana as Rabbi of Dubno where he also headed a Yeshiva. From 1755 succeeded his father as Rabbi of the Ashkenazi community of Amsterdam and head of the Beth Hamedrash established by his father. One of the greatest rabbis of his generation.
