TWO CHINESE LACQUERED WOOD FIGURES First half of 20th Century 二十世紀前期 木雕加彩人物像兩件 The first figure carved as a uniformed soldier riding atop a pair of diminutive horses and holding a rifle, the second as a man wearing a hat, tie and bright green trousers and holding a walking stick, both mounted on painted red wood bases, 18 - 29cm high (2) - PROVENANCE: From the collection of Augustus Fletcher (1928-2020), thence by descent. From 1948 to 1958 Gus Fletcher served in the Colonial Police in Malaya, and latterly was Assistant Superintendent of Police and Area Special Branch Officer in the Kuala Pilau and Bahau Police Districts of Negri Sembilan. He was awarded the George Medal in 1957 after a combined police and military operation code-named “Googly” during the Malayan Emergency.
