TWO KASHMIRI STYLE PAISLEY SHAWLS
Europe, France or Scotland, 19th century

Silk and cotton, mechanically woven, long shawls decorated with large, elongated boteh leaves, predominantly in red, both with old inventory labels to the reverse.

335cm x 151cm and 343cm x 158cm (2)

The shawl became a fashionable accessory from the late eighteenth century to the 1870s, initially introduced to Europe through contacts with India and Persia. Its characteristic boteh or paisley motif, of Persian origin, became particularly popular, while the high cost of handwoven Indian and Persian shawls encouraged European manufacturers to produce cheaper imitations, notably in Paisley, Scotland, where the Jacquard loom further increased production. By the 1870s, shawls fell out of fashion as their large size no longer suited the changing female silhouette, although fine Indian and Persian examples were often preserved as family heirlooms.
