TWO LARGE PAINTED WOOD ARCHITECTURAL MUQARNAS PANELS Possibly Egypt or Post-Nasrid Spain, 14th - 16th century Of rectangular shape, polychrome-painted, with 10 and 11 carved niches respectively, the style mirroring the architectural device of muqarnas, a type of three-dimensional ornamented vaulting typical to the Islamic lands, the painted ogival niches arranged on three overimposed levels divided by a band of black and white knotwork and another band of stylised fretwork, approximately 206cm x 52cm each. Provenance: originally in a French private collection, then recently in the UK art market.
