2-pc undyed linen walking suit w/ ecru & navy blue woven ribbon applied to back of notched collar, CF MOP buttons, matching skirt with CB hook & eye closure, c. 1910, jacket SH-SH 20”, B 38”, L 34”, skirt W 25”, L 42”, (light staining, few seam openings up to 1”, few small holes & wear spots); 2-pc nutmeg wool twill dress w/ applied wool braid, faux double breasted bodice w/ standing collar, asymmetrical closure & tabbed waistcoat pockets, trained skirt w/ inverted box pleat at CB, B 34”, L 20”, skirt W 24 ”, L 42”, (lining shattered, 2” tear along CF bodice seam, 1.5” opening bodice SS, broad minor discoloration, few spot stains under 1”, few small holes & snacks, heavy wear Wband, wear to cuffs, hem & buttons) both good; t/w mauve silk dress w/ ruched chiffon overlay, soutache & metallic net, 1910s. Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum. Provenance: Worn by Mrs. Harvey Seward (formerly Annie Bailey Powell, 1875-1959) as her going away suit. The wearer was born in Columbus, NC. She is listed on the federal census in Wake, NC in 1880. In 1898, she married Harvey L'Anson Seward (1872-1943) of Petersburg, VA in Savannah, GA. After their marriage, they are listed on the federal census in Petersburg, VA from 1900, Rives, GA in 1920, and Petersburg, VA from 1930.
