TWO OTTOMAN SHORTSWORDS (YATAGHAN), EARLY 19TH CENTURY

the first with slightly curved single-edged blade struck with an onion-shaped mark on one face, silver hilt enclosing the forte in a scalloped design and extending over the back-edge, the latter with a brief niello inscription, a pair of grips rising to a small eared pommel (one pommel inner plate missing, grips secured by wire), decorated over its surface with a design of scrolling foliage in niello, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with leather-covered iron ring bound by leather and complete with its belt; the second with broad curved single-edged blade engraved with a kilig on one face an a square on the other, silver hilt extending over the forte and the back-edge, the latter engraved with a running pattern of foliage continuing around the back-strap, and a pair of horn grip-scales (small chips)

the first : 63.2 cm; 24 7/8 in blade
