TWO PALESTINIAN EMBROIDERED (TATREEZ) FRAGMENTS
Gaza or Hebron, Palestine, mid 20th century
Two panels of cross-stitching, the largest with deep red and dark green on off-white cotton ground, with a wide geometric border, the center with a symmetrical depiction of two mounted riders (possibly Saint George) flaanking a tall urn topped with a floral finial'; the arabic inscription above reads: 'صباح اخير - good morning'; the smaller textile with dense geometric embroidered design, in a single red thread, thinned by a thin ruled line, the patterns include interlocking hooks, stars, crescent, diamonds and small rosettes, reminiscent of Hebron or Gaza; these fragments were probably used for pillowcases.
71cm x 85cm; 37.5cm x 36cm (2)
