TWO QAJAR POLYCHROME-PAINTED ENAMELLED SILVER AND COPPER QALYAN CUPS WITH YOUTH PORTRAITS Iran, 19th century Each of typical flaring cylindrical shape, with an everted reinforced rim and hollow circular base, comprising a copper cup lined in an engraved and chased silver sheet with four polychrome-painted enamelled oval portraits alternating Qajar maidens and gentlemen clad in European fashion, both men wearing a black hat and military epaulettes on pink jackets, and holding a drinking cup in their hand, the portraits interspersed amidst flowering vases with pairs of birds, the main decorative band framed within two horizontal friezes of scrolling split palmettes against a cobalt blue ground, the interior filled with plaster, 8.7cm diam. and 7.3cm high; and another, similar, with three tronies of Qajar maidens and youth, set against a ground of diagonal decorative bands with polychrome-painted flower head bouquets alternating rosette festoons on blue ground, 8.5cm diam. and 6cm high.Click here to share:
