Augsburg engravings by Martin Engelbrecht (1684–1756) served as the graphic sources for these early chinoiseries at the Lunéville manufactory, an art-historical connection first established by P. Ducret (Bastian, "Lunéville" 2009, p. 71, note 2).
Early chinoiseries in high-temperature colors, already known from Rouen, are among the rare decorative schemes at Lunéville. The finest examples were painted and signed by Nicolas Pioche or his workshop (ibid., pp. 57–58).
